NARS Audacious in Charlotte

Named after the ever beautiful Charlotte Rampling, the NARS Audacious lipstick in Charlotte ($32 / Php1650) is described to be as an "oxblood burgundy". If you know me well, you'd know that aside from nudes, any lipstick that is "oxblood" in color automatically goes into my wish/want list.

Charlotte, while technically swatches burgundy, is a different matter when it's on my lips. The above photo doesn't do it the justice - it's redder, more purple, and brighter in real life. Before buying anything, I'd like to do a thorough research on the product.. I read blogs (no matter how sponsored it is lol I just want your lip/hand swatches anyway!), I visit Makeupalley, and read reviews on Sephora/Nordstrom.

Swatches from a lot of other blogs made me think that Charlotte is a deep oxblood in color. It is, unfortunately, not. Charlotte is a lot more berry tone than what I originally thought. It definitely does not look anything like oxblood at all. I took a photo on my phone, and it captured Charlotte's more accurate color:

I mean, it's still gorgeous, it's just not the color I wanted it to be, you know? I don't wear bright lipsticks much because I don't feel comfortable wearing them. I like not standing out much (lol) hence my fondness with nudes and dark reds.

I find that it doesn't have great longevity - a shame for the amount of money you've paid for it. After eating, the inside fades, and then you're left with the dreaded lipstick ring around your mouth. The formula, however, is still as flawless as Raquel.

Here's a comparison between lipsticks that I think are close to the color of Charlotte:

Maybelline Red Garnet, Wet n' Wild 918D, NARS Audacious in Charlotte, Tom Ford Velvet Cherry

Red Garnet is brighter, more violet. Also shinier.
Wet N Wild 918D is deeper oxblood color.
Tom Ford Velvet Cherry is more on the brown side.

What's your favorite from the Audacious line? :)

  1. That's why I didn't get it, it was brighter than I expected. I think I'd like Bette more. But when I swatched the latter, I found it too wet. So, no.

    1. I wanted Bette, too. But you're right, it's too wet! And patchy!

  2. This is disappointingly berry. Like you I don't really favor berry shades on myself, I find they look extremely garish on me. I'd love to get an Audacious lippie but I never see enough testers out in malls -_-

  5. That is such a pretty color! But I think my next Audacious is going to be a lighter one (currently have Vivienne right now, which I love too). Do you have an suggestions on which would be a nice light color? I tried the famous Dominique but I look like a corpse haha.

    2. Haha! I'm not fond of purple/lilac lipsticks either! Have you seen Barbara, Anita or Anna? Those aren't too light to give you that corpse look, but they're light enough for everyday wear!
